Pin cushion Hakea explode on the scene like magic after a long summer. They are an incredible large pom pom like flower, attractive to bees and birds and especially the large black parrots (Carnaby and Red Tailed black cockatoos) that frequent the hills areas. I have planted a few in my bush garden and await the excitement of the arrival of the flowers each year, knowing the birds may get into the seed pods once they have finished with their spectacular display.
